Vocational and Short Courses Scheme
Duchy College Priority 4.4 project to train 16,000 farmers and farm workers. The innovative project will provide technical and development programmes for people working in all land-based industries. Employers will be able to claim wage subsidies while their employees are on development programmes. Grants will also be available to contribute to the cost of employing relief workers while participants are attending training events. The six-year project is expected to provide training for 16,000 people and benefit 5,000 businesses

Development of Strategy for the Red Meat Sector
South West Quality Meat: Priority 1.4 project to develop the competitiveness of the red meat sector. It will address the processing and marketing aspects of the red meat sector and the further development of regional brands to sell Cornish produce. The study will also examine electronic identification of animals, thereby increasing consumer confidence in a quality brand, and will also look at how to develop local collection and distribution networks to reduce the amount of ‘food miles’ involved in meat production. This would not only reduce lorry movements within the Westcountry but would cut down on the sort of mass movements of animals, which have been blamed for spreading the foot and mouth virus so rapidly across the UK.
