World award for fishing book
The highly acclaimed book Cornish Fishing and Seafood, written
by Carol Trewin, with photography by Adam Woolfitt, has just
been declared the winner in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards
2006, in the category Best Local Cookbook, among cookbooks
published in English in the UK in the year 2006.
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are regarded as the Oscars
of the food and drink books, with 34 categories for food books
and 14 categories for wine books. Previous winners in English
include Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. This is
the second year running that a book by Carol Trewin has won
this award. Last year Gourmet Cornwall, also with photography
by Adam Woolfitt, was the winner of this category.
Carol Trewin said: "Winning this award is a great
credit to the Cornish fishing industry and hopefully will
reinforce the message that the fishermen have a very positive
story to tell. Unlike the negative image as portrayed in most
of the media, we found that there is a great commitment to
fishing sustainably, preserving fish stocks and to promoting
the rich diversity of fish and shellfish landed in Cornwall."
Adam Woolfitt commented: "Having photographed for
hundreds of magazines and books over the years, I am delighted
that our newest title has again won against such stiff competition.
I trust the dedicated fishermen and chefs of Cornwall will
celebrate this very much as their own award!"
Publisher Alison Hodge added: "This book is a celebration
of the excellence and diversity of Cornish fishing today along
with Cornish chefs, fish processors, fishmongers and all involved
in getting Cornish seafood from net to plate."
Cornish Fishing and Seafood will now go through to the final
round of the Gourmand Awards, and will be judged against books
in other languages for The Best in the World. The results
will be announced in Beijing, China, in April 2007.
Cornish Fishing and Seafood, written by Carol Trewin, with
photographs by Adam Woolfitt, was published in September by
Alison Hodge. Profits from sales of the book go to the Duchy
Fish Quota Company to help buy fishing quota for Cornish fishermen.

Editor's notes:
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards were set up in 1994 by
Edouard Cointreau. The number of entries has grown each year
reflecting the growing food and drink publishing sector.
Judges are looking for the author 'whose personality
and heart shines throughout the book', for books with
a high quality of production and printing, and that are 'user
friendly and respect and understand' the reader.
