BBC Radio 4 utilises University College Falmouth expertise

BBC Radio 4 Drama visited University College Falmouth’s Media Centre just before Christmas to record a radio play called Rosie’s Beauty. Directed by Claire Grove, written by Annamaria Murphy, and set in a Cornish fishing village, the play is set for transmission on 16 February at 2.15pm.

University College Falmouth’s Media Technician, Jon Wills created the sound effects for the production and local actors – some of whom had previously visited Tremough to take part in student projects – played the parts of the various characters.

“The fact that the BBC recorded a drama using our facilities demonstrates that the quality of the equipment and expertise available to our students day in, day out are of a very high standard,” commented Jon. “My role was to prepare some props and use them for creating sound effects during the recording, from hitting pieces of metal together to imitate the sound of a letterbox banging shut to ripping sticking plaster to emulate the sound of leg waxing, they claimed I was ‘a natural’ and even gave me a couple of lines!”

“This opportunity to work with the BBC will further help me support our students in their work in and around the studio,” he added, when asked about what he would take away with him from the experience.

University College Falmouth’s Media Centre – which houses industry-standard digital video and audio editing facilities, a newsroom, television studio and gallery, radio control rooms, recording and post-production studios, a cinema/lecture theatre and media resources store – was the first building to be constructed at University College Falmouth’s Tremough Campus with European funding support.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall, a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through higher education. The CUC is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
