Camborne business student gains honours as she strides through the courses

Camborne graduate Lucy Cox has been presented with the Business Foundation Degree 'Student of the Year' Award by Cornwall College in recognition of her excellence on this course.

Lucy had previously spent 6 years working for local new world wine specialists Vinoceros (based in Redruth) in their marketing and events department. She gained her marketing credentials with Cornwall College's Business School and then decided on a career change.

"I came to see one of the Cornwall College careers advisers to help me find a new direction and it was suggested that now would be a good time to do my degree. The College sorted everything out for me and the following week I joined the first year Business Foundation Degree group," she said. The course is approved by the University of Plymouth. Lucy worked part-time throughout her course as Practice Manager at Waterside DentalCare, near Falmouth and continues to do so whilst she completes the one-year top-up degree. She praises the flexibility of the course for allowing her to work while she studies.

"I am delighted with my results – having never really considered myself an academic it was a real surprise! I have genuinely enjoyed the Business Foundation Degree and hope to do equally as well in my BA Business Administration Degree. Both courses have given me a massive amount of knowledge and insight into business. My career and self-confidence have been helped considerably," she added. Lucy is enjoying living and studying in Cornwall. She said: "I will definitely be staying in Cornwall but look forward to exploring the options available to me with my degree."

Almost 3,000 students have accessed wonderful new career opportunities through completing university courses at Cornwall College since the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative started. The Objective One (EU) project has brought millions of pounds of investment in new facilities, courses and buildings for university students in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

John Latham, CEO and Principal of Cornwall College said: "Lucy's progress on the course has been impressive and we are delighted that she chose to stay with us to complete her Honours Degree. Where possible, the College prides itself on being able to provide courses that offer the option of both learning and earning simultaneously to support students like Lucy."
