Celebrating Cornwall's amazing women in 2007

Nominations are being sought for the second Cornwall Women of Achievement Awards. Organisers Ashley Events are asking the people of Cornwall to nominate a friend, relative, colleague who makes a difference to the lives of others in all aspects of work and life in Cornwall including community and public service, culture, business and education.

Last year's awards were a huge success and organisers received over 150 nominations, which presented the panel of judges with a lot of tough choices to select the finalists and winners. Simon Abel of Ashley Events said: "Our judges had a very difficult time choosing the winner, as all the nominees were so impressive. They were incredible women, many of whom work tirelessly for others behind the scenes, in their communities and others, who have made a major difference to the regeneration of Cornwall and our quality of life."

Last year's Cornwall Women of Achievement winner was Sandra Calvert from Tuckingmill. Sandra's interest and enthusiasm in community engagement and crime prevention drove her to increase the number of Neighbourhood Watch schemes locally and involved her working closely with the police to reduce fear of crime in her community.

Sandra's enthusiasm in this field increased over the 15 years of working with and for communities in Cornwall, spending almost 12 of those years as a full-time volunteer, even turning part of her own home into a crime-reduction information drop-in centre.

Sandra said: "Winning was so unexpected when there were so many amazing finalists and it just goes to show how much Cornwall has to offer. The awards are a great opportunity to find out what other people are doing in the area and give credibility to the hardworking people who do so much for others and for Cornwall."

This year nominations are being sought for the following categories:
• Agriculture, food and fishing
• Business sponsored by Business Link Devon and Cornwall
• Community and public service sponsored by Cornwall County Council
• Culture, arts and media sponsored by the Western Morning News
• Education and training sponsored by University of Plymouth Colleges
• Environment and sustainability sponsored by Ocean Group
• Leisure and tourism sponsored by Cornwall College
• Young woman (age 14-25) sponsored by Ashley Events

Nominations can be made online by following the link from www.thisiscornwall.co.uk or by filling in the forms in the Western Morning News. Nomination forms can also be picked up from libraries or are available from Ashley Events on 01579 370991. Entries need to be received by Monday 19th February 2007.

The awards evening will be held at the Eden Project on Friday 23rd March. Last year tickets sold out and many were disappointed. Bookings are being taken now, by calling Ashley Events. Tickets are £40.00.
