Cornwall and Isles of Scilly to be star feature in EU magazine
Objective One projects in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
have been chosen to be the star feature in a top European
Union publication.
The next edition of InfoREGIO Panorama magazine, which is
due to be published in March, will contain a four-page spread
highlighting some of the successful projects that have been
delivered during this region's Objective One programme.
Jean-Luc Janot, in charge of editing and publication at Panorama,
visited Cornwall this week (January 16th and 17th) to gather
information and photographs for the article, on the theme
of "good practice in the implementation and communication
of the EU Structural Funds".
Monsieur Janot was given a tour of selected projects, businesses
and venues which included the Combined Universities in Cornwall
(Tremough campus), the Eden Project, Fifteen Cornwall, Pengreep
Dairy and a tour of Newlyn Harbour and the Fisheries Resource
Centre. He also visited Falmouth-based Research Instruments
which benefits from Objective One investment via Unlocking
Cornish Potential – the project that places graduates
with businesses. Research Instruments, which develops and
supplies state of the art IVF equipment has used UCP graduates
in several aspects of its business including computer programming
and product development – essential to staying ahead
of competition.
Monsieur Janot said: "I did not expect to see so
many innovations in so many different sectors of the economy,
in a region that is considered - often pejoratively - to be
the 'far corner' of England. Above all I could feel confidence,
optimism, a real fighting and winning spirit among all the
people that I have met."
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One Partnership
hosted the visit. She said: "The European Commission
is placing a much greater emphasis on communicating good practice
across the 27 member states. The Commission considers communications
as a core part of structural funds so that people can actually
see economic regeneration in action.
On a recent visit to Brussels Cornwall was praised for
its unique partnership communication vehicle through its Partnership
Office. The Commission welcomed the single voice speaking
for the Programme as one to be replicated across the new generation
of Structural Funds.
This visit by Jean-Luc was a perfect opportunity to
demonstrate this and to spread this region's positive
experiences in our long term journey of economic modernisation."
