CARNKIE COMMUNITY INSTITUTE RECEIVES Carnkie Community Institute Committee has received a major boost from the Lottery Community Fund with a grant of £90,000 toward a new purpose built facility to serve the village and the surround. Commenting on the award, Institute Chairman Steve Maunder said, “This is a great boost. The Institute has a membership of over fifty who have pledged their support to make this project happen and will also have a number of agencies who would like to deliver outreach facilities via the Institute.” The project involves demolishing the existing Men’s Institute – a structure dating back over eighty years – and replacing it with a modern building to meet the requirements of the community and surroundings. There are many heritage features that will be retained in the new building, including granite quoins in dedication to the men of Carnkie who lost their lives in the two wars. With Lottery funding, and the support of the Countryside Agency, Kerrier and Cornwall Councils the Committee now have over half the funding that they need to make the project a reality. Steve Horscroft, the Objective One funded Community Regeneration Officer for Carn Brea, said: “I am delighted for them. Carnkie Institute has the potential to form a network of community buildings across north Kerrier and beyond that are mutually supportive and offer services and outreach that many individuals would otherwise be unable to access.”
