Work starts on phase two of Camelford town centre environmental
enhancement scheme
Phase Two of the Camelford Town Centre Environmental Enhancement
Scheme is programmed to begin on Monday 19 February and will
involve granite kerbing, new street lighting, under grounding
of overhead services and other improvements.
The works will necessitate a westbound one way system from
5 March for fifteen weeks to be operated through the main
town centre of Camelford between the bridge and the Police
Station but the important message is that Camelford will still
be open to traffic and business throughout the works.
Eastbound traffic will be diverted ahead of the town off
the A39 left at Valley Truckle, rejoining the A39 the other
side of the town at Collans Cross - cars and other light vehicles
will be diverted via Camelford Station and Slaughterbridge;
HGV's via Waterpit Down.
Westbound traffic (from the bridge end of town) will be allowed
through the town centre. Chapel Street will also be one way
– eastbound only.
College Road will be closed for one week between Monday 5
and Friday 9 March from 8.30am to 5:00pm, where emergency
access only will be maintained during the road closure.
CORMAC, the highway contractual arm of Cornwall County Council,
will be carrying out the works and will start work at the
bridge end of town working towards the Police Station, reopening
the road in both directions behind them as they complete sections.
CORMAC will liaise directly with individual premises to ensure
access is maintained during business hours and disruption
to the general public is kept to a minimum.
Cornwall County Council's Executive Member for Strategic
Planning and Transport Matt McTaggart is pleased the second
phase will soon be underway. Matt said: "Cornwall
County Council would like to ask the traders and town centre
users for their patience whilst the construction work takes
place. I appreciate it will mean more disruption but the benefits
to the town produced by the first phase can already be felt
and these latest works will further enhance the appearance
of this important Cornish market town."
Cornwall County Council consulted during December on Phase
Two of the Camelford Town Centre Environmental Enhancement
scheme. As a result overhead cabling will be placed underground,
new locally sourced granite kerbstones supplied by the De
Lank Quarry, will be laid, and new street lighting will be
installed. Traffic signing will also be rationalised as part
of the town enhancement.
The works will incorporate feedback from monitoring of Phase
One works, together with Phase Two consultation results. Cornwall
County Council have worked closely with BT, Western Power
Distribution (WPD) and local representative groups including
Camelford Town Council, North Cornwall District Council and
English Heritage during this phase of the scheme and the County
Council and CORMAC will continue to do so while the works
take place. WPD will be carrying out the underground works
on all private land at their own expense.
Phase One of the project, undertaken by Cornwall County Council
in partnership with North Cornwall District Council, using
Objective One and English Heritage investment, has already
introduced a traffic priority system along High Street that
is now in operation.
Tim Yeomans, Camelford HERS Project Officer said: "We
are very pleased that these works are progressing in accordance
with the wishes of the town and that we are delivering several
projects highlighted by the Camelford Forum Regeneration and
Enhancement study. It is great to deliver what the people
of the town have noted as top priorities for environmental
improvements in Camelford."
Work will cease ahead of Easter at midday on Thursday 5
April, and the one way system will be removed for Easter.
Work will also cease ahead of the May Day Bank Holiday at
midday Friday 5 May, although the one way system will remain
in place.
Cornwall County Highways will be coordinating their routine
maintenance resurfacing works with the scheme to prevent further
disruption in the area at a later date.
Sam Leathers Project Officer said: "We are really
pleased that the HERS (Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme)
Opeway improvements are almost complete. The works have included
improvements to hand rails, steps and surfacing with concrete
being replaced with granite using local details such as pebblestone
drainage channels.
"The lighting is the finishing touch making the
Opeways safer and more pleasant for the community, re-establishing
them as a historical landmark feature within the urban fabric
of Camelford."
