More Students aiming higher at Cornwall College

Cornwall College has again seen an increase in the numbers of students applying to higher education courses.

Official figures out this week show a national rise in applications of 6.4 per cent, but Cornwall College has seen an increase of over 29 per cent.

John Latham Principal of Cornwall College said: “We are working hard to attract students both locally and from throughout the UK. Our range of courses has grown year on year and we now offer a diverse range of unique courses in areas such as Renewable Energy Technologies, Zoological Conservation and Surf Science.”

“We are extremely pleased to have seen yet another significant rise in prospective students applying to study in Cornwall. We currently have over 2000 students studying on 85 different Degree and Foundation Degree courses.”

Student debt has been a topic of hot debate and top up fees have been a concern for many young people and their parents. Students at Cornwall College pay £1500 per year for foundation degrees and £2500 per year for honours degrees, making studying a full degree with Cornwall College £5500, compared with £9000 at a university, a saving of £3500.

Mr Latham explained: “Students don’t begin to pay back their tuition fees until they graduate and are earning over £15,000 a year. We are keen to reduce student debt by keeping our fees as low as possible. Our university courses are validated predominantly by the University of Plymouth and through the CUC initiative the College is in the process of investing £25 million in new buildings and computer facilities. It really does make sense to study locally.”

The new 2008/2009 Higher education prospectus will be available from March 12th 2007, for more details call Cornwall College on 01209 616161 or email uni@cornwall.ac.uk. Cornwall College is part of the University of Plymouth Colleges Faculty.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) project, both Phase 1 and Phase 2, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF). Cornwall College is a partner of the CUC.
