200 flock to Tremough to discuss Earth's future
Two hundred people flocked to the Tremough Campus, Penryn,
last night (Tuesday 6 March) to discuss the challenges we
face in tackling global warming.
The University of Exeter and the Met Office brought some
of the UK's leading experts on climate change to the
Campus for a free public lecture, entitled 'Climate
Change and Global Challenges'. Along with University
staff and students, the audience included local residents,
representatives from many of Cornwall's leading businesses
and tourist attractions and members of Cornwall County Council,
including Chief Executive Ms Sheila Healey.
The keynote speaker was Professor John Mitchell, OBE, Chief
Scientist at the Met Office, who revealed the key findings
about climate change and the challenges we face in tackling
it. The audience was then invited to ask questions of an expert
panel featuring academics from the University of Exeter.
"It was a fascinating evening," said
Professor Keith Atkinson, Provost of the University of Exeter's
Cornwall Campus. "We were proud to introduce Professor
John Mitchell to the Tremough Campus and to welcome members
of the Council and people from some of Cornwall's leading
businesses. We were also very pleased that so many local residents
came to the Campus to join our discussion."
This lecture was part of the 'Shaping the Future'
series, which is organised by the University of Exeter to
bring people together to discuss topical issues. Usually held
at the University's Streatham Campus, Exeter, this was
the first event to be held at the Tremough Campus. The University
hopes to bring more events to its Cornwall Campus in the future.
The £100 million Tremough campus is a Combined Universities
in Cornwall initiative of which the University of Exeter and
University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners.
It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One),
the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher
Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall
County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close
to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus
offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter
is expanding its courses at the Tremough Campus to include
Politics, Law and History to its existing degrees in Mining
Engineering, Geology, Biology, Geography, English and Renewable
Energy.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly has invested in the Combined Universities
in Cornwall (CUC) project, both Phase 1 and Phase 2, through
the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European
Social Fund (ESF). The University of Exeter is a partner of
the CUC.
