Tremough mining students to represent Britain
A team of 12 students from the University of Exeter's
Camborne School of Mines (CSM) are the first Brits in over
a decade to compete in the International Mining Competition
in Tucson, Arizona.
From 22 to 26 March, the CSM team will compete against students
from all over the world in old mining techniques, including
jackleg drilling, mucking, hand-steeling, track laying, panning
for gold, suede sawing and surveying tests. Now in its 29th
year, the event was originally organised as a commemoration
for all those who lost their lives in the mining industry.
Team member and third year University of Exeter Mining Engineering
student Holly Moulding is looking forward to the challenge:
"The event is highly prestigious and we are very excited
to be taking a team from Cornwall. The competition will test
us both physically and mentally but we are fully prepared.
We hope our participation will raise the profile of mining
in Cornwall and of Camborne School of Mines as a world-leader
in training Mining Engineers."
The team has received sponsorship from Golder Associates,
IMMM South West, Imerys, Wardell Armstrong and CSM Association
Members, which has funded equipment, team kit and travel expenses.
Holly Moulding continued: "The team would like to
thank our sponsors, without whom we would not have been able
to compete."
The £100 million Tremough campus is a Combined Universities
in Cornwall initiative of which the University of Exeter and
University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners.
It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One),
the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher
Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall
County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close
to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus
offers a lively student community. Building on the success
of its existing degrees at the Cornwall Campus in Mining Engineering,
Geology, Biology, Geography, English and Renewable Energy,
the University is now able to offer degrees in Politics, Law,
History and Cornish Studies.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly has invested in the Combined Universities
in Cornwall (CUC) project, both Phase 1 and Phase 2, through
the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European
Social Fund (ESF). The University of Exeter is a partner of
the CUC.

Editor's notes:
Camborne School of Mines (CSM) was founded in 1888 and became
part of the University of Exeter in 1993. CSM has an international
reputation for research and teaching related to the understanding
and management of the Earth's natural processes, resources
and the environment. Its portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate
and research degree programmes provide an excellent basis
for careers, in the UK or overseas, within the Earth resources,
civil engineering, environmental and energy sectors. The vast
majority of CSM graduates are employed in areas related to
their degree. CSM is based at the University of Exeter's Tremough
Campus, near Penryn.
