Cornish pub hosts 100% organic menu

There aren't many pubs that can claim to know exactly where every item on their menu comes from but the Springer Spaniel pub at Treburley near Launceston is exceptional in that respect. Owned by Soil Association organic farmers Roger and Lavinia Halliday, the pub makes a point of using food produced by local and organic suppliers, and a special three-course menu on Wednesday 28 March is 100 per cent organic including the wine. The meal will be preceded by a short talk about organic food and farming by Martin Davies, technical adviser for Organic South West.

Chef manager Stuart Moir is confident that the food served that evening will be of the highest quality: "The standard of food produced in Cornwall is superb and when it's organic as well, I have every confidence that people will enjoy one to the best meals served up in any pub across the county." Stuart, originally from south-east Scotland, is passionate about supporting local farmers.

"In Scotland we always had a sense of traditional and seasonal food, something that I missed when I first moved to East Anglia over 20 years ago," said Stuart. "Once I arrived in Cornwall however, I soon set about sourcing local food and was amazed to find such variety and quality. Since I've been managing the Springer Spaniel our menus now fit in with what's available, knowing that people want a real taste of Cornwall and, equally important, knowing that we are doing our bit to support the local economy and farmers."

Owners Roger and Lavinia Halliday bought the pub 12 months ago convinced that the market for organic food, locally produced was the key to success. Beef and lamb from their own organic farm is served at the pub, which has recently been completely redecorated. With Cornish brewed beer, an organic children's menu (Little Jack Russell) and smoke-free policy, the popularity of this well-known 200 year-old pub looks set to rise dramatically over the coming season. Table bookings for 28 March are essential on 01579 370424. For more information visit: www.thespringerspaniel.org.uk.
