CORNISH FARMERS INVITED TO LOOK TO THE FUTURE AT NEXT GENERATION FARMING CONFERENCE

Cornish farmers are being encouraged to make an impact on the design of new farming initiatives for the continued promotion of the industry at an event being hosted by the Cornwall Agricultural Council on December 4th at The Watergate Bay Hotel, Newquay.

The conference, entitled 'Next Generation Farming', will look to the future of farming in Cornwall, examining the realities facing the industry and the next generation of farmers. The conference aims to identify the initiatives that will be needed to secure the future prosperity of the industry.

The event will encourage open comment on strategic farming issues, with the emphasis on taking a positive and constructive view towards the opportunities that lie ahead. The day will be part of a consultative process providing the Cornwall Agricultural Council with a steer for its strategy review and guidance on future industry initiatives.

Speakers at the event will spell out the realities that Cornish farmers can expect in the future and will be delivered by the following speakers:

Politics - Tim Render, Director of Food, Farming and Rural Development, Government Office South West.
Europe - John Lee, Farming Adviser to the EU
Finance - Pat Tomlinson, Regional Agriculture Manager, HSBC
Marketing - Joss Davidge, Marketing Manager, Ginsters

The afternoon will be made up of a series of twenty-five minute workshops, of which delegates will have the opportunity to attend four of the specialised sessions. Delegates will be encouraged to comment on what they consider to be the important issues on each topic whilst indicating possible initiatives to address them.

The workshop programme is made up of the following eight units:

Succession/New Entrants - What issues relate to the division of farms amongst families and the introduction of new farmers?
Amalgamation - What issues effect the grouping of farms, machinery sharing and other partnerships amongst farmers?
Labour Provision – What labour provision concerns exist in Cornwall?
Asset Management – What hinders best use of farm assets?
Precision Farming – What hurdles restrict the introduction of this new technology?
Financial Planning – Why is financial planning difficult?
Time Management - What time management issues face farmers?
Managing Stress – Where is the stress in farming?

The conference will take place on 4th December at the Watergate Bay Hotel in Newquay, starting at 10am. The event is free and delegates will enjoy a complementary lunch made up from Cornish produce.
