New flagship university centre officially opens in Saltash
Cornwall College Saltash declared its brand new flagship
university centre officially open today (April 26) at a special
ceremony held on site.
Dr Ian Tunbridge, Executive Director from the Combined Universities
in Cornwall (CUC), unveiled the plaque of the Hamoaze Building,
which is named after the estuary of the tidal Tamar, Tavy
and Lynher rivers, as College staff and students, councillors
and other VIP guests welcomed the new venture.
The £750,000 initiative, to bring more university courses
and facilities to Cornwall, has been funded by the CUC, which
is part funded by the Objective One European Regional Development
Fund.
Steve Warnes, Head of Cornwall College Saltash, said: "This
excellent new facility is part of a major wave of new university
level centres created as part of the CUC's multi-million
pound capital programme designed to make a wider range of
courses available to more people in more locations than ever
before.
"This is clearly great news for current and future
students to ensure they experience the best quality learning
environment while studying with us at the College. But it
is also hugely significant for businesses in the region, by
providing them with the opportunity to recruit graduates with
specialist knowledge and expertise to help them flourish in
today's knowledge based economy."
The modern 345m² single storey Higher Education Centre
built by ROK Ltd, which took six months to complete, features
excellent teaching facilities with four new classrooms, meeting,
tutorial and staff rooms and boasts state-of-the-art equipment
and a social area adapted to cater for wireless laptop users.
The degree level courses on offer at Saltash, approved by
the University of Plymouth, include Business, Computer Networking,
Counselling, Education, Early Childhood Studies, Ecommerce,
Information Technology and Social Care. Many of the courses
are offered on a full-time and part-time basis to fit around
work and family commitments.
The official opening of the Hamoaze Building began at 11am
and was attended by College staff, industry professionals
and the Mayor of Saltash.
Guests were given the opportunity to have a look around the
brand new building and its resources and a light buffet was
served.
John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College said: "The
official opening was a huge success. It was great to see so
many people there to join us in our special celebratory event.
This new development will put Cornwall College Saltash at
the forefront of university provision in the area and the
range of courses and first class facilities on offer will
give local people the opportunity to progress personally and
professionally. These are exciting times for university education
in Cornwall, particularly Saltash."
