New opportunities for local students

Cornwall College has unveiled a number of innovative new courses for 2007, giving would-be students more choice than ever before.

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "We've developed a range of exciting new courses as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall project, designed to develop students' skills and interests while at the same time matching industry needs. The courses provide an ideal stepping stone to that all important first job after graduation."

Courses being offered for the first time this September include Cruise Ship Operations and Integrated Environmental Management in Camborne, and Live Arts Performance in St Austell.

"The cruise ship operations course seemed a logical step for us," explained Programme Manager Stuart Mathieson. "We've developed a popular range of culinary arts and hospitality degree courses at the College which have been running for a number of years, but the market is constantly changing. We've seen the number of Britons taking ocean cruises more than double in a decade, creating increasing demand for skilled personnel, so we're simply meeting that demand."

The Integrated Environmental Management Foundation Degree joins a popular range of courses in environmental management and conservation already offered at Cornwall College's Camborne Campus. "The demand for our renewable energy and environmental courses has grown in recent years, with twice as many applications last year as in 2005," explained Programme Manager Bruce Forrest. "This new course will equip students with knowledge of biodiversity, climate change, environmental economics, pollution control and sustainability. We're already seeing interest from applicants for this year."

Meanwhile, the Live Arts course in St Austell, thought to be the first of its kind in Cornwall, offers students the chance to be involved in the technical aspects of theatre production or the practical side of performance.

New courses, approved by the University of Plymouth, are being developed across Cornwall College's seven main campus sites, providing local people with the opportunity to study for a quality degree without having to spend tens of thousands of pounds on tuition fees and moving away.

Further information on any of the above courses, or on the full university provision available at Cornwall College, is available at www.cornwall.ac.uk or by calling 01209 616161 or emailing uni@cornwall.ac.uk.
