University College Falmouth staff and students create President's
trophies for the Royal Cornwall Show
Staff and students from University College Falmouth have
been involved in a commission with a difference: to design
and make trophies for Royal Cornwall Show President, James
Williams, to award to the best exhibitors of livestock and
cattle at this year's event.
The trophies were a collaboration between the College's
Director of Design, John Miller, second year BA(Hons) Illustration
student, Richard Green and Technician at the College's
Design Centre, Adam Stringer.
John Miller designed the trophies which incorporate engravings
of a bull and ram respectively. Richard Green produced the
drawings, which were interpreted into data using computer
aided design software by Adam Stringer, who then machined
the drawings into polished aluminium using the College's
computer-controlled milling machine.
"As illustrators we are encouraged to explore a
wide range of media, but even so, this was a first,"
explained Richard Green. "Producing images within
the constraints necessary for the milling process was challenging,
requiring a whole new approach to my normal drawing style,"
he added. "Working in collaboration with John and
Adam from the Design Centre has been an invaluable introduction
into the world of professional practice."
"My motivation in commissioning these trophies
was to find a way of involving all the creative work that
is happening in the college with the aims and objectives of
the Royal Cornwall Show, which itself has so many creative
elements, including many within the agricultural community,"
added Royal Cornwall Show President, James Williams,
who will also become Chair of University College Falmouth's
Board of Governors next month.
The work of BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts and BA(Hons) Garden
Design students will also be showcased at this year's
Royal Cornwall Show. The Combined Universities in Cornwall
stand will include some of the artwork that was included in
the college's show garden which achieved a bronze medal
at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
