New CCTV system for Gorran Haven harbour

Gorran Haven Fishermen's Society has recently been awarded Objective One Fisheries investment of nearly £2000 to install a Closed Circuit Television system (CCTV) at the port.

Gorran Haven is a small 13th century fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall. The harbour is home to twelve registered fishing vessels.

In the past few years Gorran Haven has been increasingly subjected to vandalism, the harbour, its fishing vessels and fishing gear being a prime target.

The fishermen decided to actively combat this problem by installing a CCTV system with assistance of Objective One investment. The CCTV system that has been installed at Gorran Haven will provide accurate coverage of all the fishermen's facilities. The system will enable intruders to be identified and the behaviour of individuals using the facilities closely monitored. In the event of a crime being committed, retrospective viewing of tapes will provide evidence for police.

Nicky Harrison, Objective One Fisheries Project Officer commented: "A number of ports around Cornwall have had CCTV installed with assistance from the Objective One Fisheries Programme. All these ports have seen improvements in the level of crimes committed, with some systems even leading to convictions."

Joe Hocking, skipper of FY4 'Fulmar' and member of the Gorran Haven Fishermen's Society commented: "The installation of this CCTV system will be a great asset in protecting our equipment from vandalism and theft. We are very grateful to South West Pesca Ltd and the Objective One programme for enabling us to install such a fantastic system. We recently had an attempted theft of the RNLI collection box on the quay since the cameras were installed which we are currently investigating. This system provides excellent quality colour images which the police can use to prosecute those involved in acts of vandalism and theft."

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in The Gorran Haven Fishermen's Society through the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) fund.
