Falmouth illustrators launch new industry sourcebook
The great and the good of the illustration world converged
on the Royal Society of Arts in London this month to celebrate
the launch of University College Falmouth's 'Book
of Illustrated Quotes & Sayings 2'.
The book features the work of the latest graduates from the
University College's internationally-renowned BA(Hons)
Illustration course, each of whom selected a quote or saying
and then illustrated it in their own style. The result is
an evocative mix of styles and genres.
"I selected the 'Quotes & Sayings'
theme because you can apply any illustrative context to it
– from advertising illustration and narrative fiction
to editorial comment and information source," explained
course leader Alan Male. "Fundamentally, it is an
essential industry sourcebook that provides publishing, advertising
and media professionals with a rich vein of creative talent
to commission work from."
Male himself is no stranger to the world of international
book publishing, having illustrated more than 30 complete
books during his career. His latest book, Illustration: a
Theoretical & Contextual Perspective, is due to be published
by Watson-Guptill Publications in New York and Thames &
Hudson in the UK, and translated into 30 languages for publication
across the globe.
"This new body of work by Falmouth graduates shows
the distinctive qualities long associated with the College,"
said leading illustrator, Michael Foreman, who provided
the foreword for the book and attended the launch. "The
work is recognisably 'Falmouth' but there is no
house style as such, quite the opposite in fact. The visual
language of Falmouth is one of great variety and innovation,
and of obvious enjoyment in the making of work. What makes
it really special, however, is the determined professionalism
and an awareness of who the work is for."
Copies of the book are available to order online by visiting
