Guest lecture by Tom Shakespeare – Illustration, provocation, investigation: what happens when art and science collide?

Tom ShakespeareGeneticist, sociologist, performer and writer, Dr Tom Shakespeare, is to deliver a lecture at University College Falmouth as part of a series of high profile public events.

His lecture, entitled 'Illustration, provocation, investigation: contemporary collisions between science and art', will take place at University College Falmouth's Woodlane Lecture Theatre on Tuesday 16 October 2007 between 6pm and 7.30pm, and members of the public are warmly invited to attend.

Dr Shakespeare is currently Chair of Arts Council England, North East and a research fellow at the Institute for Policy and Practice at Newcastle University, specialising in the fields of disability, bioethics and the arts.

As well as having authored an impressive number of academic books, Dr Shakespeare also has 12 years' experience as a performer and writer. Most recently, he devised and performed a one-man show, entitled 'No Small Inheritance', at Newcastle's Live Theatre and a live art piece, 'I Can't Stand up for Falling Down', at Platform 0005 in Gateshead. A regular contributor to UK print and broadcast media, he has a monthly column on Ouch, the BBC disability website.

His involvement in the UK disability movement dates from 1986, and he co-founded Disability Action North East and the Northern Disability Arts Forum. From 1999 to 2005, Tom was director of outreach for the Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences Research Institute, a project exploring bioethics and science engagement. He was instrumental in the development of the café scientifique network both in the UK and internationally. He is regularly deployed by the British Council as a visiting speaker in different countries. In 2003, RADAR awarded him their UK People of the Year award for furtherance of the human rights of disabled people.
