Communications best practice in European Union spotlight
The Objective One Partnership Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has been chosen as an example of best practice to highlight communications techniques to other EU members.
Carleen Kelemen, Mark Yeoman and Clare Morgan – Director, Deputy Director and Media Relations Manager at the Partnership Office respectively – have been invited to a major conference in Brussels next week, ‘Telling the Story, Communicating Cohesion Policy Together’. The conference, taking pace on November 26 and 27, is expected to be attended by about 450 delegates from across the European Union.
Ms Kelemen and Mr Yeoman will be giving a presentation at a workshop entitled ‘Going beyond press releases: media relations, how should we tell the story?’ Miss Morgan will be sharing advice on media communications at a day long networking corner. Keynote speakers at the opening session are the chair Dirk Ahner, Director General, European Commission, Directorate General for Regional Policy; Danuta Hübner, Commissioner for Regional Policy, and Vladimir Špidla, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.
The Partnership Office has become increasingly recognised as a unique structure for communicating European Structural Fund information to the media, partners, projects, MPs, MEPs and members of the public. This growing profile has been supported by long running, intelligent coverage from the media in Cornwall. A journalist from Brussels visited Cornwall earlier this year and that trip, hosted by the Partnership Office, resulted in a five-page article in Panorama, an EU-wide publication. Earlier this month a delegation from Bulgarian government departments involved in structural funding were hosted by Cornwall County Council. As part of the tour the Partnership Office shared the experience about communications of a complex subject.
The European Commission is increasing the emphasis on communication for the upcoming structural fund programmes (for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly this will be Convergence). This conference is organised by the Directorate General for Regional Policy, in cooperation with the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities and the Directorate General for Communication. It is intended to offer advice to regions across the EU, particularly the new member states, on how to set up and carry out an effective communications strategy.
