First postgraduate awards day for University College Falmouth

Postgraduate Awards Day"Don't let anyone put you off," urged Guest of Honour, and internationally renowned author/illustrator, Jill Murphy, in her inspirational speech to the assembled company at University College Falmouth's first ever Postgraduate Awards Day this week. "Three publishers turned down The Worst Witch on the grounds that no one would want to read about a school for witches – well they got that wrong, didn't they?" she laughed.

Well known for her picture books, for which she has won many prestigious awards, Jill was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by University College Falmouth earlier this year, in recognition of the outstanding contribution she has made to children's literature in particular. The Worst Witch was published when Jill was in her 20s, and continues to delight readers across the world.

Over 100 postgraduate students from the College's MAs in Broadcast Journalism, Contemporary Crafts, Contemporary Visual Arts, Illustration: Authorial Practice, Interactive Art & Design, International Journalism, Photography, Professional Writing, Science Broadcast Journalism, Sports Broadcast Journalism, Television Production, Textile Design, 3D Design, 20th Century Art & Design and PhD Research returned to Cornwall for the event, held at the Tremough Campus, to receive their awards.

"Postgraduate students are an important influence on the culture of UniversityCollegeFalmouth," said Principal, Professor Alan Livingston. "The College is proud that these students chose Falmouth as a springboard for their creative endeavours and congratulates them – as well as the friends and family who have supported them – on their achievements," he added. "Whether they make their mark on the world as writers, directors, broadcasters, designers, photographers, artists or illustrators, we thank them for their valuable contribution to the College's continuing success and hope that their ambition has been fuelled by their experience of Falmouth. We are also delighted that JillMurphy is our Guest of Honour, and thank her very much for giving so generously of her time."
