Falmouth Graphic Design lecturer’s work branded iconic
A brand marque designed by Bryan Clark, Senior Lecturer on University College Falmouth’s award-winning BA(Hons) Graphic Design course, has been accorded iconic status in Grafik magazine. The publication’s special report on brand icons singles out Bryan’s work for La Grande Epicerie de Paris as one of the top ten brand icons in the world. Other designers featured are Paul Rand, David Gentleman and Otl Aicher, with corporate marques for CBS, Time Warner, British Steel and Ford.
La Grande Epicierie de Paris is the upmarket food hall of Le Bon Marche, the Paris equivalent of Selfridges and sells elegantly packaged, high quality foods. Design heavyweight Yorgo Tloupas of Intersection, said in Grafik magazine: “The logo is an example of cleverness and restraint – perfectly readable, albeit with a ‘double take’ effect. Instantly recognisable, it also works in black and white, in small, and can even be drawn by hand, from memory, which should probably be the ultimate test of a logo’s visual efficiency.”
Bryan, who joined University College Falmouth from industry where he had been Creative Partner and Director of international brand design consultancy, Lewis Moberly, commented: “I was surprised and flattered that my work deserves iconic status.”
Over the course of his consultancy career, he worked for clients across the world and has won many national and international awards for print, packaging and brand identity, including a prestigious D&AD Silver Pencil, and awards from the New York Art Directors Club, Eurobest Gold, Mobius, Design Week, and DBA Design Effectiveness as well as Creative Review's Creative Future for packaging design.
Bryan works primarily with second and third-year students on BA(Hons) Graphic Design, and is also a Governor of University College Falmouth. His design research centres on professional practice, brand psychology and creative measurement.
