University College Falmouth art history student shortlisted for AAH Dissertation Prize

A postgraduate student from University College Falmouth’s MA in 20th Century Art & Design, Peter Kwee, was this year shortlisted by the Association of Art Historians for its Student Dissertation Prize in the MA category. Peter, who graduated with distinction in June 2006, joined a small but select group of five other entries from the Royal College of Art, the Courtauld Institute, Aberdeen University and City University London.

This prestigious annual Dissertation Prize is awarded by the Association of Art Historians in conjunction with the publishers, Thames & Hudson, for the most outstanding BA and MA dissertations in the history of art, and attracts a wide range of entries from UK undergraduate and postgraduate students of history of art and visual culture, enrolled on both practice-based and theoretical courses.

Peter’s dissertation, entitled Facile and the Surrealist field, investigates the use and interaction of photography, poetry and the book form in the Facile, a book co-authored by Man Ray and Paul Eluard, in relation to the Surrealists’ social aims.

Since completing his MA, Peter has continued his keen interest in art history in general and in Surrealism in particular, and is now studying for a PhD at Essex University.

“I see my time at Falmouth as having provided a valuable foundation for my continuing studies,” explained Peter. “The subject of my doctoral research, the illustrated book as object in Surrealist practice: France 1919-1939, very much builds on the line of enquiry that I followed for my MA dissertation.”

“This is a significant achievement not only for Peter but also for our course,” said MA 20th Century Art & Design Course Leader, Fiona Hackney. “For Peter’s work to be singled out in this way by such a prestigious association is a tribute not only to his scholarly activity but also to the quality of the Falmouth experience,” she added.
