New fish landing facilities for Hayle Harbour

Hayle Fishermen's Association has recently received investment of over £40,000 to upgrade the facilities for fishermen at the harbour. The project was jointly invested in by the EU Objective One Fisheries Programme, Rural Renaissance and Penwith District Council. The project was also supported by ING and Hayle Harbour Management Ltd who own the harbour.

The improvements to the Hayle Harbour facilities include the installation of two brand new electrical winches used for lifting boxes of fish, shellfish and gear; the purchase of two ice machines housed in a new secure unit on the quay; insulated bins for storage of ice, and a set of scales. The project also allowed for the fishermen to be trained in the proper use of the winches. John Carter, fisherman and Chairman of the Hayle Fishermen's Association added: "The working life of the fishermen is much better and the quality of the fish is kept at premium. It's really brought Hayle harbour into the 21st century. We want to thank all the funders for their help."

"Penwith has a rich and complex maritime history with a strong emphasis on fishing through its principle ports of Newlyn, Penzance, St Ives and Hayle," said Jim McKenna, Chief Executive. Throughout the Objective One period the District Council has been active and supportive of sustainable fishing initiatives. "We are proud to have helped with technical support and a small grant towards this long term sustainable project for the fishermen of Hayle." Cllr Hudson Smith added: "We must remember that not only do our fishermen carry out a difficult job their boats and culture add significantly to the feel of the town."

"Investing the SWRDA Rural Renaissance funds into projects that have an immediate and direct benefit to the local economy is very satisfying," said Bill Holliday, Manager for the Rural Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Partnership.

Editor's notes:

  1. Hayle harbour is owned by ING (a Dutch owned bank) and managed by Hayle Harbour Management Limited (Estate Manager Richard Ford).  Moorings are let on an annual basis to a mixture of fishermen, private boat owners and boatmen (pleasure boat operators).  During the winter the quay is used for laying up boats (including fishing boats) and storing fishing gear such as shellfish pots.  Some of the structures and parts of the quays are listed as sections of the quay go back to 1800's. 31 fishing vessels employing 42 fishermen operate from the port of Hayle, mainly fishing for shellfish.

Objective One Fisheries Programme
Cornwall's Objective One Fisheries Programme has invested a total budget of over £10 million since April 2001 to the fishing industry in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  The funds are a mixture of EU and national funds, through the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance fund (FIFG) and the Marine and Fisheries Agency (MFA).

The projects were approved by the Marine and Fisheries Agency in partnership with an Objective One Fisheries Priority Management Group, made up of local fishing sector representatives.  South West Pesca Ltd helped applicants to develop projects by providing guidance and help on completing application forms and submitting applications.

319 projects have been approved through this process with £10,084,953 committed to these projects.
