New net drum for 'Harvest Reaper'

Tom McClure, owner and skipper of the under 12 metre fishing vessel 'Harvest Reaper', has recently received an investment of £1,740 towards the cost of purchasing and installing a new net drum. This project is one of the last few to receive investment through the Objective One Fisheries Programme.

Having a net drum will improve safety conditions on board the vessel for Tom and his crew. The net drum will ensure that the gear and its associated ropes are stowed tidily and safely between hauling and re-shooting. The drum will also improve the crew's visibility of each other whilst working at sea.

Tom McClure commented: "This new equipment will be a boost to the safe working conditions on my vessel."

Other vessel modernisation projects also receiving offers of grant aid recently include: Mr D Pascoe (grant to install fish storage tanks on 'Little Pearl'); Thomas Trawlers Ltd (fish handling quality upgrade to 'Amanda'); Mr A Pascoe (safety upgrade for 'Lamorna'); Mr T Vinnicombe (working conditions improved on 'Leviathan'); Mr C Vinnicombe (fish handling and accommodation improvements for 'Amethyst'); Mr D Stevens (net monitoring system and fuel efficiency monitoring on 'Crystal Sea'); Mr H Fletcher (life raft on 'St Ruan'); Mr J Jones (safety onboard 'Danmark'); W Stevenson & Sons ('William Sampson Stevenson'); Mr F Vinnicombe ('Cornish Lass'); and Mr K Downing (safety and quality improvement to 'Golden Harvest').

Clare Leverton, Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager, added: "The total number of grant aided projects to the Cornish fleet reached 115 this year, with the bulk of the investment going into safety and working conditions and on the high priority of improving fish handling quality. The total grant aid for vessel modernisation projects in Cornwall is in excess of £630,000. The Objective One Fisheries Programme is now closed and the industry is waiting for the opening of the new scheme called European Fisheries Fund."

Objective One Fisheries Programme Background Cornwall's Objective One Fisheries Programme has invested a total budget of over £10 million since April 2001 to the fishing industry in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  The funds are a mixture of EU and national funds, through the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance fund (FIFG) and the Marine and Fisheries Agency (MFA).

The projects were approved by the Marine and Fisheries Agency in partnership with an Objective One Fisheries Priority Management Group, made up of local fishing sector representatives.  South West Pesca Ltd helped applicants to develop projects by providing guidance and help on completing application forms and submitting applications.

319 projects have been approved through this process with £10,084,953 committed to these projects.

The Objective One Fisheries Programme grants are managed and partly funded by the Marine and Fisheries Agency, a national agency of Defra (Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs).

The Marine and Fisheries Agency is an executive agency of government which is tasked with service delivery, inspection, and enforcement provided by the government to the fishing industry and other marine users in England and Wales.

The MFA has overall responsibility for the enforcement of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and its associated regulations within the 60,000 square miles of English and Welsh waters.  The MFA manages the FIFG grants from the EU which fund the Objective One Fisheries Programme in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
