Earth experts meet at Tremough

Two hundred of the world's top experts on measuring and monitoring changes to the Earth will meet in Penryn this month. From 15 to 17 September, the University of Exeter is hosting the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) annual conference, with the theme, 'Measuring Change in the Earth System', on its Tremough Campus. The RSPSoc is an international society for Earth observation and photogrammetry with close to 1,000 members from all over the world.

The latest technology being developed to monitor our oceans, geology and other natural habitats will be unveiled.  In addition, meetings to discuss new developments in monitoring climate change, new laser scanning techniques and data analysis will all take place on the campus.  Along with the University of Exeter's own experts, visitors from major organisations including Ordnance Survey, NERC National Centre for Earth Observation and Universität Bonn, Germany, will present their latest discoveries.

Delegates will stay in student accommodation on the Tremough Campus but will have the opportunity to explore the area and visit local attractions.  The team organising the conference has set up a number of social activities, from a boat trip and reception at Falmouth's Maritime Museum to a formal conference dinner at the Falmouth Hotel and a surfing lesson with Falmouth Surf School.

The conference has been organised by the University of Exeter in partnership with other research institutions in the South West. Staff from both Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Plymouth have been involved with the organisation.  The conference has also received prestigious support from commercial sponsors, including Ordnance Survey, Geomatics Group, Google Earth, Analytical Spectral Devices, NERC and Intergraph. Optech and WET Labs are also sponsoring the conference.  Companies exhibiting at the conference are: ITT VIS, Infoterra, Wiley Blackwell, Spectra Vista, Vexcel Imaging GmbH, Taylor & Francis, Planet Ocean Ltd, Argans Limited, Bluesky, Photonics, Ocean Optics, Leica and Skye Instruments Ltd.

Dr Karen Anderson of the University of Exeter's Geography department on the Tremough Campus is convening the conference.  She says: "It's a great honour for us to be hosting this major conference.  I'm particularly excited about hearing the latest news on developments in remote sensing and photogrammetry.  I'm also looking forward to showing our delegates around the Tremough Campus and surrounding area.  Many of them have not visited Cornwall before so we will be giving them a taste of what the county has to offer."

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners.  It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.  Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community.  The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on the Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) project, both Phase 1 and Phase 2, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF). University of Exeter is a partner of the CUC.
