Greenfield Plants - MP Andrew George attends open day
Greenfield Plants was formed in 1998 to offer shrubs and
other garden plants to growers, garden centres, and supermarkets
as an alternative to buying from Holland.
The key crops selected were evergreen plants that benefit
from Cornwalls naturally mild winter climate and cool
summers. The choice was made for those plants required in
volume and with an existing demand. Annual production has
already reached the following volumes:
1,000,000 Hedera
150,000 Mixed shrubs
100,000 Lavender
80,000 Camellia
60,000 Rhododendron
60,000 Azalea
50,000 Grasses
30,000 Ferns
10,000 Phormiums
Traditionally most of these have been sourced from Holland,
Belgium and Denmark.
In order to reach these quantities we have expanded considerably
in a short period of time, and this has been made possible
with the help of European funding in the form of a 5b grant,
and most recently an Objective One investment. This has allowed
us to bring into use 15 glasshouses, and more importantly
create 12 new jobs for the Hayle area, together with up to
5 part time supporting roles. A very considerable achievement
in only 4 years
To mark the end of this present phase of expansion, and to
recognise the roles played by Europe, our suppliers and customers,
and particularly the staff, we are holding an open day on
Friday 25th April at 11.30am, which our local MP, Mr Andrew
George has kindly agreed to attend.
