“VIRTUAL HOTEL” The Headland Hotel at Newquay will be opening its doors to students from schools in Camborne, Redruth and Truro and showing them how a three star hotel operates from top to bottom. Staff from every department at the hotel will be working with the students, who are studying Leisure and Tourism GCSE, on a ‘Virtual Hotel Day’, on the 8th and 15th November. They will be running workshops so the students can get a real understanding of the many different job roles which are needed to make a top hotel run smoothly. The general manager, reception staff, housekeeping department, chef, restaurant, bar staff, hotel maintenance and marketing department will all be working with the students to give them a practical experience of the skills, values, attitudes, standards and teamwork required to provide guests with the perfect Cornish hotel experience. Objective One funding through the European Social Fund will support these special workshops as part of the Education Business Partnership’s ESF project ‘Pebble’ which aims to increase personal skills and understanding of the jobs market, and skill shortage areas. “The skills expected and needed by employers and customers in Cornwall are very high and one of the aims of the Pebble project is to provide students at school with an understanding of the expectations of employers and to make sense of ‘school learning’ in the workplace,” said Helen Field from the Education Business Partnership. “We have been working closely with staff at The Headland Hotel and the teachers at the schools to plan these days. The management and staff at The Headland have been absolutely marvellous. These days are a measure of their pride in their work, enthusiasm and commitment to the development of young people and potential employees of the future.”
