Dehwelans Festival of Cornwall unveils exciting plans

Cornwall is soon host to a major arts, culture and heritage festival taking place for the second time in history, between 28th April – 3rd May 2004, in a marquee village on the Barrowfields, Newquay. 'Dehwelans' is Cornish for 'Homecoming' and the festival is rooted in attracting a number of overseas Cornish from the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other destinations who are in search of their family history. The festival is also aimed at a much wider market including locals and visitors from the rest of the UK, all of whom can join in the celebrations and learn more about Cornwall and what it has to offer in 2004 and beyond.

The festival is staged at an exciting time in Cornwall's development both economically and socially. It provides an ideal platform for Cornish artists to showcase their diverse and unique talent across a variety of sectors including music, arts, crafts, drama, sport, history and heritage, language, maritime, countryside, food and drink and much more. This six day event has been successful in securing investment from Objective One, Cornwall County Council, the District Councils of Cornwall and also the private sector.

Dehwelans has developed an attractive programme of events which will take place during the Festival week including musical and dramatic performances, workshops, talks and debates, tours across the whole of Cornwall, arts and crafts Gallery / Shopping marquee, children's activities, sporting events, in addition to an exhibition marquee showcasing many heritage and Cornish language organisations from across Cornwall. The Hospitality marquee will highlight Cornish food and drink with a café and bar each day and evening.

The Festival organisers have worked hard with local groups and experts to ensure all aspects of Cornwall have been included – for example the Cornwall Young Enterprise Scheme has run a competition for youth businesses to design the official Dehwelans souvenir – the winning team from Truro School successfully designed granite coasters, with the theme "Take home a piece of Cornwall". Other planning partners have included Creative Kernow, Cornwall Arts Marketing, Cornwall Record Office, Cornwall Family History Society, Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and many of the destinations/ attractions for the Dehwelans tours programme to name but a few.

Highlights of the Festival programme include a Brassband bonanza supper, themed folk concert by Cornwall Songwriters, Jazz and Rock night in association with Restormel Arts, Cornish wrestling competition and presentation, Historical fashion show and dance spectacular, Dehwelans dinner featuring Cornish male voice choir and American folk singer 'Jim Wearne', musical supper featuring Canadian singer of Arthurian songs 'Heather Dale', award winning band 'Naked Feet' and local band 'Dalla'. A range of enjoyable and informative guided walks around Newquay including one at Perranporth, called 'Discovering St Piran' will be on offer and much much more.

The Dehwelans Tours are a series of 'Ten Tours' enabling visitors or locals to experience the rich history and breathtaking scenery that makes Cornwall so unique. Take your pick from the vast range of options including:
