CUC welcomes international VIPs
A prestigious delegation of parliamentarians from the
Republic of El Salvador toured the new Combined Universities in Cornwall
(CUC) campus at Tremough, Penryn on Thursday 8th July. The group comprised
six members of El Salvador's Legislative Assembly accompanied by Candy
Atherton MP. The visit was arranged by the International Parliamentary
Union, a worldwide organisation working for peace and co-operation among
peoples.
CUC Coordinator, Gordon Kelly showed the delegation around
the campus, where construction work continues on the spectacular new building
which will be shared by Falmouth College of Arts and the University of
Exeter in Cornwall when it is completed this September.
Gordon Kelly commented: "Our guests from El Salvador
were keen to hear how we are working with the Government and the Objective
One Programme to bring about economic regeneration for Cornwall. We have
recently welcomed other parties from the Czech Republic, Australia, New
Zealand, Hungary, France and Poland who are interested in our progress.
It is exciting to see how people from around the world are inspired by
our innovative approach towards delivering higher education and building
the knowledge economy."
Other highlights of the day for the group from El
Salvador included visits to Sure Start Trevu, Carn Brea Leisure Centre,
the Beacon Partnership and Falmouth Docks.

Editor's notes:
The Combined Universities in Cornwall is a dynamic and visionary
partnership that is one of the driving forces behind Cornwall's
renaissance. This partnership combines the Universities of Exeter
and Plymouth, Falmouth College of Arts, The Open University, The
College of St Mark & St John, and the Peninsula Medical School,
with Cornwall's Further Education colleges - Cornwall College, Truro
College and Penwith College. It aims not only to provide the students
of the future with more choice and greater opportunities, but also
to boost the economic fortunes of the region for the benefit of
one and all.
The CUC initiative has been funded through the Objective One Partnership
for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the South West Regional Development
Agency, Cornwall County Council and the Higher Education Funding
Council for England.
