Minister praises Objective One Programme
During a visit to Cornwall today, Paul Boateng, Chief Secretary
to the HM Treasury was emphatic in his congratulations for
what has been achieved, through the Objective One Programme,
for developments such as the Combined University for Cornwall,
the Urban Regeneration Company for Camborne, Pool and Redruth, actnow and the Knowledge Spa.
He said: "I've seen real commitment to working together
in Cornwall today, and some innovative approaches to partnership
on all sides. There are some important lessons for UK plc
more generally as we build on a platform of macroeconomic
stability to create sustainable growth and prosperity for
all.”
He assured those he visited that the Government was committed
to regional development in Cornwall and elsewhere. He said
that the Government would continue to take a proactive approach
to regional policy in the EU and at home, and encouraged the
continuation of Cornwall's innovative approach to partnership
and strategic planning.
Welcoming his enthusiastic support, Carleen Kelemen, the
Director of the Objective One Partnership commented: "We
know that our approach of investing in the economy for the
longer term, rather than setting up overnight quick fixes,
is the best way. It was good to hear the minister acknowledge
our efforts which will be rewarded in the future. The role
of higher education in establishing pools of intellectual
capital is critical to enabling different types of business
activity here in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”
