NEWLYN STUDY HOLDS KEY TO NEWLYN'S FUTURE

Up to 2,000 jobs depend on a thriving Newlyn fishing industry. A team of consultants has been appointed to prepare a strategy and action plan for the regeneration of the port. This decision has been taken by the Newlyn Fish Industry Forum launched a few months ago at the leading fishing port in England where landings are worth over £18 million a year.

The forum, chaired by Michael Galsworthy, CVO CBE, is a well-founded public / public sector partnership with full support from DEFRA, the Government Office for the South West and Penwith District Council. The Forum is well aware of the many problems and threats confronting the fishing industry and have commissioned the Truro based development team, Atlantic Consultants (lead by John Forsyth) to prepare a strategy that will build on available resources, heritage and provide new investment to regenerate Newlyn and the wider community.

“We are deliberately setting our sights high,” declared Mr Galsworthy. “Our main ambition is to make Newlyn a centre of excellence involving the fishing industry and tourism. The name Newlyn must become synonymous with successful regeneration , quality of product and quality of tourist experience. In the years ahead we want people to be immensely proud of their Association with Newlyn as a premier fishing port in England, as a place to live and work and a fantastic place to visit.

"To do this we must build now to secure the future. We hope everyone in Newlyn will get involved in the study and will take the chance to have their say. We need to produce a strategy, which everyone in Newlyn will want to support enthusiastically because its success will depend on their commitment. The next few months will be critical.”

The Atlantic Consultants team includes fishing industry specialists, engineers and designers.

Mr Forsyth commented, “We are very conscious of the challenge facing us. Our aim is to help Newlyn find a way to fight agaist the trend of decline and frustration in the industry. We must also find a way to ensure that the people and businesses of Newlyn have the chance to prosper despite the current adversity.”
