'SELLING A BUSINESS' SEMINAR A GREAT SUCCESS The third in a series of seminars for businesses in Cornwall was heralded a success by hosts Cornwall Business School, and partners Finance Cornwall. The seminar focused on the hurdles to be overcome when selling a business in Cornwall, the pitfalls to avoid, and provided advice on the process of the sale. Speakers from Finance Cornwall, Cornwall Business School, Winter Rule Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers and Stephens & Scown solicitors took questions from delegates. Opening the seminar, Jim Seligman, Head of Development at Cornwall Business School, spoke about the complexity of the sale process, and drew on his own experience. "I have learned that advice is extraordinarily important in the sales process. A good team can make a real difference to the success and quality of a sale," he said. The morning saw presentations from Scott Bentley (Winter Rule Accountants), Anthony Welford (Stephens & Scown), and Robin Teverson and Rob Seymour (Finance Cornwall). "Selling a business represents a one-off opportunity
for the owners to capitalise on years of hard work," explained
Scott Bentley, "and so it is very important that they gain a
thorough understanding of the process. The seminar included a number of sessions, explaining the legal, financial and practical aspects of selling a business. Tony Welford, partner in the Commerce Department of Stephens & Scown, presented on the legal process. "I hope we were able to convey that, despite the challenges, the process of selling a business should be a fundamentally positive experience, if appropriately planned and managed," he remarked. "The venue was ideal for this gathering and we look forward to future events here." For further information, contact Lucy Ferguson on 01209 616100, or email lucy.ferguson@cornwall.ac.uk.
