Organic Herb Pack Launch at Cornwall
Show
New ranges of organic culinary and medicinal potted herbs
make their first appearance at the Royal Cornwall Show this
week (9th 11th June). Westcountry Organic Herbs, based
at Coads Green near Launceston, have designed five different
packs each containing six varieties of fresh herbs for people
to grow at home.
With a pesto, Italian, French, English and medicinal pack
to choose from there is something for everyone, says nursery
owner Derek Stride. "Organic herbs have a wonderful,
intense aroma and flavour which can't be matched in my opinion",
said Mr Stride. "And our herb packs come with
their own uniquely designed mini greenhouse so it's easy for
people to keep the plants on a window sill where they should
last two to three months."
Cornish design company Type High from North Petherwin, Launceston,
were commissioned to come up with a design to extend the life
of potted herbs in accordance with Soil Association principles.
Organic South West, now based at Bodmin, supported Westcountry
Organic Herbs' new development, as project manager Traci Lewis
explains. "We promote organic food and farming in
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and when Mr Stride came to
us to ask about launching this new product we were keen to
get involved, so we have helped him to develop packaging which
will sustain the plants for more than just a few days. In
fact these herbs will do well if transferred into gardens
for an even longer life. It's a great idea and a first for
Cornwall."
The herb packs will be available by mail order later this
summer but samples will be exhibited for the first time at
the Royal Cornwall Show in the WFU Food and Farming Marquee
on the Soil Association stand no. 401. Local chefs will be
using the fresh organic herbs as they do their live cookery
demonstrations to encourage visitors to experience the 'great
taste of organic' for themselves at Organic South West's stand.
Westcountry Organic Herbs are also holding a prize draw for
visitors completing their questionnaire at the stand.
