Fistral Surf Centre Provides More
Than Double the Amount of Jobs Forecast
Restormel Borough Council's Economic Development Team is
pleased to announce that investment into the Fistral Surf
Centre has paid off. The centre has exceeded expectations
by providing double the amount of jobs forecast and attracting
several new surfing competitions.
The successful creation of a waterfront restaurant and retail
facilities, as well as the re-development of the café,
has seen the number of jobs rise beyond expectation. The beach
also played host to 7 new competitions and saw an expansion
of regular events.
The Fistral International Surf Centre has been a major success
in the regeneration of Newquay. Working in partnership with
a private developer, Restormel Borough Council has been able
to provide high quality accommodation for the British Surfing
Association and Surf Life Saving Club. The re-development
of the site, including public toilets and showers, has contributed
to the number of Newquay's beaches providing first class facilities
for visitors and locals.
Karen Walton from the British Surfing Association says: "The
provision of excellent facilities for the competitor and spectator
may be the reason why we have seen a rise in the number of
junior and women's events at our shores. Moving our association
to Fistral has raised our profile, our workload and we are
employing double the amount of staff."
Paul Wright, Newquay Tourism Development Manager says: "This
initiative clearly shows what can be achieved in partnership
between the public and private sector. Newquay has a facility
it can be justifiably proud of and one that has led to the
visitors and residents both seeing the benefits."
The Fistral International Surf Centre was co-financed by
Restormel Borough Council, Cornwall County Council, a private
contribution and £500,000 of Objective One investment.
