20,000 Cornish Pasties for Royal
Show
Pengenna Pasties is preparing for a Cornish pasty bonanza
at the Royal Show (3-6 July). The company will be staging
Cornish pasty making demonstrations and have been told to
prepare to bake and sell in excess of 20,000 pasties over
the four show days.
The Royal Show is the UK's biggest agricultural show, based
at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Camelford based Pengenna Pasties,
which has shops in St Ives, Tintagel and Bude, will be in
the Fresh Cornwall marquee, where Cornish food, tourism and
agriculture are being promoted. It is the only marquee at
the show dedicated to a single county and is always a huge
hit with show goers.
"We just love doing the pasty making demonstrations,"
says John Bate, general manager of Pengenna Pasties.
"It's a real crowd pleaser and you always hear someone
say 'he'll never get all that in there', but we always do
and the results are delicious. We've not done the Royal Show
before, so we're really looking forward to it and hopefully
will interest lots of people in our 'Pasties by Post' service."
The Fresh Cornwall marquee is being organised by Cornwall
Taste of the West, to look and feel like a traditional Cornish
farmers' market. The deli area is being managed for the second
year by the award winning Cornish Cuisine, based in Penryn.
There will also be creamy Cornish ice cream from Callestick
Farm near Truro, clotted cream and dairy products from Rodda's
of Redruth, plus fresh produce from Hayle's Riviera Produce.
Gareth Eddy, head chef at Pescadou, Padstow and one of Cornwall's
most dynamic young chefs, will be entertaining with Cornish
cookery theatre featuring seasonal local produce.
"Once again it's going to be a Cornish feast,"
says Angie Coombs, manager of Cornwall Taste of the West.
"There's always a real buzz in the Fresh Cornwall marquee
at the Royal Show and this year we're expecting more visitors
than ever to come and try our wonderful local food and find
out more about the county. Our aim is not just to encourage
visitors to Cornwall, but also to inspire people to use the
internet and mail order to purchase delicious Cornish food,
so they can enjoy it no matter where they live."
Cornwall Taste of the West will be continuing the research
started at the Royal Cornwall Show earlier in June, asking
show goers about their shopping habits and perceptions of
Cornish food. Results should be available in the autumn and
will be used to help guide the development and expansion of
the Cornish food industry.
Tourism is also a feature of the Fresh Cornwall marquee at
the Royal Show and exhibitors will include Gardens of Cornwall,
the Eden Project, King Harry's Cornwall and the Nare Hotel
of Veryan.
The Fresh Cornwall marquee will be found at K447, block 51
on the corner of the main ring. The show runs from Sunday
3rd to Wednesday 6th July. For more information about exhibitors
