Outdoor Officer Joins Stithians
Lake
The new Angling and Watersports Centre at Stithians
Lake near Redruth is not the only new addition to the Lake
as Neil Hutchinson joins charity South West Lakes Trust in
the role of Outdoor Development Officer.
The Centre, opening early in May this year,
has attracted investment from Sport England, the Objective
One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and the
South West Regional Development Agency along with South West
Water, Cornwall County Council, Kerrier District Council,
Falmouth Marine School, Wendron Parish Council and local clubs
and businesses.
Offering a vast improvement in facilities the
new centre will include quality indoor changing rooms, boat
storage, classrooms and an indoor seating area for visitors
and activity participants.
Neil has joined South West Lakes Trust from
West Somerset District Council where he worked as Leisure
Officer. He has enjoyed a variety of roles prior to this within
the sports and leisure industry in both the private and public
sectors.
The role of the Outdoor Development Officer
is to increase participation in training and improve standards
of performance in sailing, windsurfing and canoeing and to
increase participation in outdoor activities, including fishing
and environmental work.
Neil will work in close liaison with the Stithians
Centre Manager, Mark Gunston, to implement and extend training
programmes in partnership with Falmouth Marine School which
will help to increase participation at all levels and in all
disciplines.
Speaking of his new role Neil said "I
am determined to develop partnerships and links that allow
more local people and visitors the opportunity to experience
the wide variety of activities available at Stithians Lake
and to help further their skills. The team at the Lake strive
to provide a quality service to new and existing customers."
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One
Partnership, said: "Objective One has invested more
than £300,000 into the £1 million facilities and
it is good news to hear of its opening in May.
"The finished centre will provide excellent
vocational training facilities, and is an opportunity for
the already popular lake to attract more visitors. Part of
the Objective One investment is being used to fund the Outdoor
Development Officer, whose aim is to increase participation
in sports and education, and this can only strengthen the
aim of boosting the region's economy."
The Trust is currently organising a family open
day to celebrate the opening of the centre which will be held
on Sunday 8 May at the lake and will offer the opportunity
to try out various activities and visit the new centre and
facilities.
Further details on both the centre and open
day are available on 01209 860301 or by e-mailing info@swlakestrust.org.uk.
