Cornwall College building for the future
Cornwall
College has embarked upon a further multimillion pound capital
programme to build on its position as a key provider of university
provision in Cornwall.
The College has announced a new £1.5 million art and
design building at its Camborne campus, a £750,000 building
at its Saltash campus, and a £1.9 million building adjacent
to its Newquay campus, subject to planning approval.
The move comes as part of Cornwall College's plans to expand
its presence in Cornwall and offer more university-level education
opportunities across the whole of the South West area, as
part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall project. The
new buildings will provide improved learning resources, classrooms
and lecture theatres for students.
"These
three facilities are part of a major second phase of university-level
developments across Cornwall, which have been enabled by the
Combined Universities in Cornwall," said CUC Co-ordinator
Gordon Kelly. "Using investment secured by CUC from Objective
One and UK government, Cornwall College and other CUC partners
are making a wider range of courses available to more people
in more locations than ever before. This is clearly great
news for future students, but it is also hugely significant
for businesses in the region, which will need to recruit graduates
with specialist knowledge and expertise if they are to flourish
in today's knowledge-based economy."
Dr
Ken Woodcock, Vice Principal Planning and Higher Education
at Cornwall College, said "These developments will allow
even more students to study locally and keep their debt levels
lower by studying in Cornwall. We want to provide the very
best learning environment for our students; the new buildings
will enable us to do this, and will provide room to expand
the range of university courses we offer. These are exciting
times for university education in Cornwall."
