Statement from Thelma Sorensen, Chair of the Cornwall Business
Partnership, regarding the announcement of job losses at Imerys
"This announcement is a shock for the economy of
central Cornwall and my sympathies are with those people who
are personally affected.
"The global economy is changing and this inevitably
puts pressure on all the traditional industries that play
such an important part in the Cornish economy. Whilst we must
do all we can to help those industries the key to our economic
future is a much more diverse economic base.
"We are fortunate that the Cornish economy is
currently enjoying a period of increased economic prosperity.
I am sure that both Imerys and agencies such as Jobcentre
Plus will be making every effort to help those affected find
new employment. We know that the labour market is particularly
tight at the moment and that there may be opportunities in
other industries.
"At the global level this announcement highlights
the ever growing importance of fuel costs to the economy –
the Cornish economy as a whole needs to become more energy
efficient in everything it does – construction, transport,
business and building management as well as the provision
of services -- to ensure that it becomes ever more competitive."
