Farm shop opening
A
new, one-stop farm shop and café was opened on Saturday
July 15th by a business that has seen rapid expansion in less
than a year.
Kent couple Nick and Karen Stickings moved to Tresorn Farm,
Bissoe, in 2003. The following year they bought two Large
Blacks – pedigree Westcountry pigs – with a view
to making their own sausages.
They are now the Cornish Pig Company, have 350 free range
Large Blacks, their farm land has grown from five to sixty
acres and turnover has increased dramatically. The couple,
who have received support from two Objective One gateway funds,
Business Link and Taste of the West, are now regulars at the
Wednesday Truro Farmers’ market as well as at food and
agriculture shows, including the Royal Cornwall.
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One partnership,
said: “This is a clear example of how Objective
One investment can support new and growing businesses. The
success of this company will have a knock on effect with suppliers,
neighbouring farmers and employees.”
The farm shop stock will include the farm-made sausages
(98% pork with no additives or preservatives); hogs pudding,
dry cured bacon, pork and ham as well as beef from their new
herd of south Devons (the meat is hung for 24 days); organic
lamb, chicken and eggs; seasonal fruit, vegetables and a delicatessen.
There will also be a farm café which will serve breakfast,
lunch and tea.
The expansion means three more staff, and a £45,000
investment, where some investment for equipment also came
from Objective One via Business Link.
Karen said: “We want to bring people back to the
farm to see the work that goes into rearing quality produce.
We have visited all the farms whose produce we will be stocking
in addition to our own and they all have the same passion
for their produce.
“Having the kitchen and tea rooms will enable
us to cook fresh, homemade produce to take home or to eat
on the farm whilst taking in the beautiful views of Bissoe
Valley. We understand that many of us are conscientious about
healthy eating but with most of us working full time we do
not have the time to visit different shops so with it all
being available under one roof hopefully now we won’t
have to.”
Graham Woolcock of Business Link which has provided a total
of £22,000 of Objective One Capital Grant investment
since the company began, commented: “I am pleased
to be associated with the Cornish Pig Company, they have worked
extremely hard at building this business and the farm shop
will compliment their business activities perfectly. It’s
great to also see genuine Cornish Rare Breeds being brought
back into the market place.”
David Rodda, Cornwall Agricultural coordinator, added: “Maximising
added value is a key strategic goal for the Objective One
Programme and the Cornwall Agricultural Council. This project
is an example of a farmer taking advantage of market opportunities
to develop a new business activity. It is also an example
of Objective One delivery partners working together to create
the necessary support package.”
Angie Coombs, Taste of the West spokesperson, said: “This
new development will be a great opportunity for established
and new customers to see, first hand where the produce comes
from and to enjoy trying it in the café as well as
buying it to take home. The quality of the produce speaks
for itself and I am sure will prove very popular.”
