Cornwall's First Counselling Degree

Cornwall College is the first to offer a full BA (Hons) Counselling degree in Cornwall. The University of Plymouth has validated the new degree, run at the College's Camborne campus, which completes the Counselling provision on offer, enabling anyone to study from absolute beginners to those already working in the sector looking for further professional development.

"The Department for Social Sciences, Social Work and Health Professions at the College has been established to meet the growing needs of healthcare professionals in Cornwall," said curriculum manager Ruth Beretta. "For the first time you can study counselling to honours degree-level in Cornwall along with four other full degree programmes within the department's specialist areas."

The degree is to be run as a 1-year progression to honours course for anyone who has a relevant qualification such as a Diploma in Higher Education, Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject. It is also possible for students to progress onto the degree from the College's other counselling courses including the Certificate in Advanced Counselling Studies and Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling & Therapy.

Maureen Mason, course manager said: "I am absolutely delighted that students in Cornwall will now be able to get an Honours degree in Counselling. We have been working towards this for some years and it is very satisfying."

Student Susan Uglow had already reaped the rewards of the specialist training available within the department: "Completing a foundation degree in Health & Community Studies has enabled me to fast track my career - I have updated my knowledge base, learnt new skills including IT and presentations, gained new friends and acquired the confidence to go forward." Susan is now the deputy manager of Mencap in Lostwithiel.

John Latham, Principal and CEO of Cornwall College added: "We are committed to providing high quality education and training at all levels. With this new degree programme we are moving forward in our quest to provide higher education to suit the needs of the County."

The College is now taking applications for all courses starting in September. For more information, please contact Customer Services on 01209 616161 or e-mail enquiries@cornwall.ac.uk. Full course details are available on-line at www.camborne.ac.uk.
