Lynher Dairies scores a double gold at Taste of the West Awards
Cornish
cheese producer Lynher Dairies Cheese Company Ltd has scooped
three medals at the annual Taste of the West Food & Drink
Awards 2006. Yarg Cornish Cheese and Yarg Wild Garlic Cornish
Cheese were both awarded a gold while Cornish Pepper picked
up a silver.
The Taste of the West Food and Drink Awards recognise the
finest in food, drink, hospitality and food retail in the
South West of England. The awards are highly respected throughout
the industry, being acknowledged by regional and national
retail and catering buyers alike as indicators of the very
best food and drink available in the region.
The latest accolades come hot on the heels of a good year
for the company, based at Pengreep Dairy in Ponsanooth near
Truro. Awards have already been won at the Devon County Show,
The World Cheese Awards, the Royal Highland Show and The Royal
Bath and West Show.
The dairy has also just been informed that it's set
to win three prizes at the British Cheese Awards. The award
winners will be announced at the Great British Cheese Festival
in Cheltenham at the end of September.
Co-director Catherine Mead said: "We were delighted
to receive three awards in this prestigious competition. We
are thrilled with how things are going this year and we've
been developing recipes and trying out different salting and
maturing processes to widen our repertoire and enhance what
we've got. These changes are being met with interest
from the public and we hope these awards will mean even more
people will be tempted to try our beautiful and unusual cheeses."
Lynher Dairies Cheese Company Ltd produces eight different
cheeses but is best known for its Yarg brand of which it is
the sole producer. Yarg Cornish Cheese is a bright, creamy
cheese wrapped in distinctive mould-ripened nettles while
Yarg Wild Garlic Cornish Cheese is wrapped in wild garlic
leaves giving the cheese a subtle yet distinctive flavour.
Under the Taste of the West scheme, producers and processors
across the six counties of the South West are able to gain
recognition for the diversity and quality of their products.
The awards cover eight food and drink categories which are
divided into nineteen classes, alongside five hospitality
and retail classes which give awards in each county. The products
are judged for excellence in quality for taste, appearance,
texture, aroma and packaging.
