Falmouth's graphic designers win D&AD Global Student
Awards
Two recent BA(Hons) Graphic Design graduates from University
College Falmouth have added yet more major awards to the spectacular
tally already won by students from the course during this
academic year. Matthew Jakeway and Sarah Whitehouse have won
first and second prizes in two different categories of the
D&AD Global Student Awards.
Matthew Jakeway won first prize in the Advertising Category
for his direct mail campaign to persuade people to leave money
to the NSPCC in their wills, which earned him a Yellow Pencil
and £1,000, whilst Sarah Whitehouse won second prize
in the Graphic Design Category for creating a set of promotional
bags for visitors to a luxury packaging exhibition for paper
merchant, Arjowiggins.
A third graduate, Andy Kidd, received a commendation for
creating a range of lunchboxes for Asda that considered both
structure and graphics, and a prize of £250.
D&AD is an educational charity. Its purpose is to set
creative standards, educate, inspire and promote good design
and advertising. The D&AD Global Student Awards highlight
the best emerging design and advertising talent from hundreds
of international colleges and universities. Entrants are asked
to respond to a number of briefs that are based on current
'live' industry issues. These are written and
judged by the world's foremost designers, advertising
creatives and business professionals and to win a first prize,
the winning work in each category must be bang on brief, brilliantly
crafted, deftly executed, and show that special spark of creative
thinking.
Second prizes are awarded to entries which are excellent
in terms of either creative originality or craftsmanship.
Garrick Hamm, D&AD Education Chairman, said: "The
work was very impressive this year. The increased number of
international entries and the overall quality of execution,
accompanied by great ideas has made for a very impressive
body of work all round. Winning a D&AD Student Yellow
Pencil and being featured in the D&AD Student Annual is
the most effective way for students to stand out from the
crowd and make an impression on the creative sector."
"Naturally, we are delighted," said
Course Leader, Jon Unwin. "The D&AD Awards are
regarded by the industry as the leading showcase for the brightest
young talent and we are very proud of these students'
achievements in a highly competitive arena."
