Building work starts on College's new flagship university centre at Saltash

Work is under way on building a new £750,000 facility at Cornwall College Saltash, which will bring more university courses to the town.

The College's new building will be a modern single storey structure with purpose-built classrooms and teaching facilities that will put the College at the forefront of university provision in the area, offering degree courses in business, health and social care, accounting, local government and information technology.

John Latham, CEO and Principal of Cornwall College said: "The range of courses we can now offer gives local people the opportunity to progress personally and professionally. These are exciting times for university education in Cornwall."

Steve Warnes, Head of College at Cornwall College Saltash, agrees. "With the new building we opened on this campus last year together with this latest development means that the people of south east Cornwall have access to first class facilities."

The project, being undertaken by Construction Company Rok, is expected to be completed early in the New Year, and forms part of a multi-million pound capital programme being undertaken by the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative to expand university facilities in Cornwall.

Professor Alan Livingston, Chair of the CUC Steering Group adds; "This new facility for Saltash is part of a major expansion of university-level education in the region enabled by the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative. As well as helping people to fulfil their study ambitions locally, centres such as this are developing the pool of high-level skills which Cornwall must have if it is to seize the opportunities presented by today's knowledge-based economy."

Rok Regional Leader John Mellitt said: "This is a fantastic project that will open up huge opportunities for people in Cornwall and Rok is delighted to be part of the team making it happen."

The developments at the Saltash campus forms part of Cornwall College's plans to expand its presence in Cornwall and offer more university courses, validated by the University of Plymouth, across the whole of the South West.
