Cornish Degree Students Get Top Marks in the South West

Cornwall College students are celebrating an amazing achievement this year as some of them gain the top grades in the South West. The BA (Hons) Social Work graduating class of 2006 has seen three of its students come in the top six of a University of Plymouth cohort of 120 students across Devon and Cornwall.

"This is a fantastic achievement," commented Programme Manager Dr Deborah Phillips, "All of our students have worked so hard. These are excellent results with so many of our students being awarded first class honours degrees and a significant number graduating with a high 2.1. It is a testament to the expertise, high standards and effort invested by our teaching team and the quality of higher education that is now available in Cornwall."

Students took their studies even further this year when they hosted a ground breaking conference on domestic violence. Professor Audrey Mullender, Principal of Ruskin College Oxford and Professor Gill Hague from the University of Bristol were key speakers and are respected academics and international leaders in the field of domestic violence. Other guest speakers included local practitioners and care workers with experience in dealing with domestic violence in the local community.

Student Noreen Bronsan commented, "It's been brilliant to study such a high quality degree in Cornwall. Not having to travel to Plymouth to study has been a great benefit to my studies. I think my first class degree is a great reflection of this and I certainly feel like I have had the full university experience here at Cornwall College."

John Latham, CEO and Principal of Cornwall College said, "As a partner College of the University of Plymouth and a key player within the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative, we are dedicated to providing high quality degree-level study for Cornwall. These results go to show how far we have come in establishing ourselves as a viable alternative to studying at degree level out of county."
