MA Television Production students shoot and surf for Extreme
Sports Channel
Students on University College Falmouth's critically
acclaimed MA in Television Production have written, shot and
edited a TV commercial to promote Big Wednesday Surf on the
Extreme Sports Channel.
Falmouth-based Big Wednesday Surf is one of the UK's
leading surf retailers, offering its customers the latest
clothing brands, top of the range surfboards, wetsuits and
specialist equipment.
MA Television Production student, Leighton Spence, devised,
wrote and storyboarded a narrative for a humorous advertisement
involving a group of rubber clad young people, heavily laden
with surfing equipment, descending onto a Cornish beach only
to find a mill pond instead of clean breaking waves. On the
day of the shoot, Leighton was joined by a cohort of MA Television
Production students – cameraman Nick Pykett, Sound Operative
Andrew Cullen, and Lighting Operative Sarah Mahoney.
"The entire advertisement was shot in just one
day which is testament to the skill and efficiency of the
production team," said Leighton.
MA Television Production student, Ben Young, handled the
post-production side of the film, adding special effects to
enhance some of the beach scenes. The commercial is now a
regular on the Extreme Sports Channel.
"From the outset, the students have been diligent,
professional and extremely enthusiastic about the project,"
commented Big Wednesday Surf Marketing Manager, Mike
Reed. "Although we were confident of a high standard
of work from University College Falmouth, the students have
more than exceeded our expectations," he added.
"We have seen fantastic results so far and look
forward to building on our successful collaboration with the
College in the future."
"I am extremely pleased with the success of this
project," added University College Falmouth's
2D Design Business Fellow, Jono Wardle. "The students
from MA Television Production worked as an efficient and professional
production unit, utilising all the skills and experience the
course equips them with to create an advertisement for one
of the top surfing retailers in the country," he
explained. "The film they created will be watched
by millions on the Extreme Sports Channel – now that's
what I call getting noticed!"
