Local greenwood-working business wins Working Woodlands grant
Rustic Roundwood Furniture, the Truro-based greenwood-working
business, has won a grant from Working Woodlands to help with
investment in equipment.
Set up three years ago by Hugh Cole, Rustic Roundwood Furniture
uses locally sourced coppiced hazel to produce a variety of
products including garden chairs, planters, border edging
and individually commissioned pieces. Whilst rustic furniture
provides the roots of the business, Hugh also runs green woodworking
courses at Cornwall College. In order to increase the amount
of teaching and courses Hugh offers he was awarded a grant
from Working Woodlands to help with the purchase of new tools
for use by his students
Many of Cornwall's woodland have historically been
managed as coppice particularly on land that would otherwise
not be able to support economic woodland such as steep sided
valleys. Rustic Roundwood Furniture provides an outlet for
Cornish woodland owners wishing to manage the understorey
of their woodlands. Hugh was awarded his grant because his
work is bringing under-managed woodlands in Cornwall back
into production. Once managed properly these woods can make
long-term contributions to Cornwall's rural economy.
Hugh's enterprise is one of the first to be awarded
a grant from Working Woodlands. This European and UK government-funded
Project is offering grants and support to businesses that
grow wood, work with wood or sell wood or wood products in
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Contact Working Woodlands
on 01803 867891 for further information.
